The History…The Ahtanum Valley Museum has been formed to preserve the history of the area surrounding the Ahtanum Creek drainage, from the head of the valley to Union Gap. Many sites important in the early settlement of Yakima are on the Ahtanum. Oblate Fathers established a Catholic Mission before 1854, a few miles downstream from the large, year-round spring where Yakama Chief Kamiakin had his gardens. His was the first land in this part of the territory that was irrigated and the first place where apples were grown. He also raised cattle there, beginning in 1840. Several small communities later thrived in the rich agricultural valley.
The Purpose…Our purpose as a not-for-profit corporation is to promote an understanding of area history as it affects contemporary citizens; we feel an urgency to research and preserve it before it is forever lost. Our intent is to develop an economically sustainable museum where we can preserve and display artifacts and memorabilia. The Vision…We foresee a museum that will have educational facilities as well as displays and activities for people of all ages. Historic items have all ready been donated, and acquisition of a building to house them is being actively pursued. The Hope…We would welcome you to become a member of our group! Needed are cash contributions and donations or loans of historically significant articles. All gifts are tax-advantaged. Your time, labor and good ideas are much appreciated. Let us know how you would like to be involved.
